The 1998-99 season was a huge success for Manchester united. They got off to a fine start in the premiership including emphatic wins over Charlton and Chelsea. By Christmas time they were challenging the top spot along with Aston Villa. February was their finest time in the premiership, as it included a memorable 9-0 demolition of Nottingham Forest. Manchester United continued to dominate the league through out the season and ran out eventual winners. A great FA Cup run, earned them a final against Newcastle, which in turn produced a great 2-0 victory for united, goals coming from Scholes and Sheringham. However the highlight of the season has to be the champion’s league run, they defeated Juventus in the semi finals and the final match against Bayern Munich was a thriller. United were 1-0 down with seconds remaining, however their two super substitutes, Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunner Solskjaer scored in stoppage time to seal a famous victory for United. The triumph of winning the treble had occurred, which was the perfect send off to Peter Schmeichel’s time at Old Trafford.
Repeating the same success the following season would prove to be difficult. United did not take part in the FA Cup due to commitments in participating in the World Club Championships. However, United won the league in emphatic fashion, with David Beckham in inspiring form and Dwight Yorke scoring goals for fun. United only managed to reach the quarter finals of the Champions league.
United repeated their premiership success for the third season running in 2001 as they once again easily won the league title. Their main title challengers being Arsenal, once again.
United started off the 2001-02 season badly, by the time of November, they had won as many matches in the league as they had lost, and looked certain to fail to win the premiership. However, United embarked on a great run, between January and March of 2002, winning most their matches, with new signing, Ruud Van Nistlerooy, in inspiring form and Juan Veron settling into the Manchester United set up. United finished the season in third place and in the semi finals of the Champions league.
