With the ban of all English clubs not being allowed to play in European Cup competitions lifted, Manchester united got off to a great cup run in the European Cup Winners Cup, their first European match in years, came against Hungarian side, Pecsi Munkas as United won 2-0 at Old Trafford. United went onto reach the Cup Winners Cup final, after beating Polish outfit, Legia Warsaw in the semis. The final between Manchester united and Barcelona was a classic, two Mark Hughes goals won the tie for United 2-1. Elsewhere they had a decent campaign in the first division, finishing the season in sixth place, however they were deducted a point as many of the United’s players were part of a 21 man brawl in a tie against Arsenal. United also reached the final of the league cup, however they lost the tie 1-0 to Sheffield Wednesday.
Manchester united came into the 1991-92 season, looking for success now in the league. They started the season in brilliant fashion, which included a run of nine successive league victories between November and January. They looked certain to win the league title; however they collapsed in the last few months of the season, which included an embarrassing defeat against bottom side West Ham. United could only manage to finish second as Leeds United won the league. However, they won a cup competition for a third successive year as they beat Nottingham Forest in the league cup final.
The arrival of Roy Keane at the start of the 1992-93 season helped Manchester United gain momentum in search of the premiership title. They set the pace early on as they were in title contention with Aston Villa and Norwich most of the season. With only few weeks remaining, it was a two horse race between United and Aston Villa. However as Aston Villa fell late on in the season, United exploited full advantage by winning their key matches to secure the title. The title ceremony took place after a 3-1 victory over Blackburn at Old Trafford.
The 1993-94 season was a mighty success for Manchester United, they dominated the premiership through out the season, winning the title with one month of the season remaining. The United back line was outstanding through out, which included, Dennis Irwin, Gary Pallister, Steve Bruce and Paul Parker. Manchester United also won the FA Cup for the first time in four years, as they thrashed Chelsea 4-0 in the final. United had the opportunity to win the treble, however they lost to Aston Villa in the league cup final.
