After being promoted to the first division the previous season, Manchester United were looking to capitalise on their current great form in the top flight. In their first season back in the top flight they were stunningly impressive as they finished 3rd in the league. They also reached the FA Cup final in 1976, where they met Southampton, however they lost the final.
United once again reached the FA Cup final in 1977, however on this occasion they won the tournament. It capped off a decent season as Manchester United finished the season in 6th position in the first division.
United fell slightly the following season as they only managed to finish in tenth place.
They slightly improved during the 1978-79 season as they finished ninth in the first division, however they did win the FA Cup once again.
United finished second in the first division by the end of the 1979-1980 season, their best finish in over 12 years.
