Manchester United 4-1 Benfica
European Cup Final – 1968

Matt Busby’s ten year quest of bringing the European Cup back to Old Trafford was nearing to an end, Manchester United were finally in the final. In the first half, goalmouth incidents were few and far between, Eusebio shattered Alex Stepney’s crossbar with a spectacular 20 yard shot and United wasted a splendid chance when David Sadler shot wide after being put clean through by Kidd. Ten minutes into the second half, Dunne began a move to the right and Sadler’s near post cross was deflected wide by Bobby Charlton into the back of the net as Manchester United took the lead. In the 80th minute, Benfica equalized, with a thumping goal by Graca. The match went into extra time and United went for the kill. George Best latched onto Stepney’s long clearance, wriggled past Adolfo, drew Henrique out of his goal and coolly slotted the ball into the empty net. Two minutes later, Kidd made it 3-1 and it looked like United's party. With only minutes left of the first period of extra time, Bobby Charlton secured victory for Manchester United.
