United finished the 1960-61 season in seventh position, however the following season proved to be an unmitigated disaster for the Reds. They finished the campaign in a lowly 15th position, despite having the likes of Johnny Giles and Bobby Charlton. Success finally fell Manchester’s way during the 1962-63 season as United reached the FA Cup final, facing Leicester City in the final. Johnny Giles was in inspirational form for the Reds on the right wing during the 1963 final, helping United to victory and the silverware was to go inside the Manchester united cabinet. Unfortunately United’s league form totally dipped as they finished a lowly 19th position, just avoiding relegation to the second division. Improvement was vital for the following season, and they received more than they had requested at the start of the season. A dramatic improvement, finishing 17 places higher than the previous season, in second position.
United had the squad and facilities of a team winning the league the following season, and they did just that. United were in emphatic form during the 1964-65 campaign. They won a staggering 26 matches during their league campaign, in turn, finishing top of the league.
